By Zoila Palma: Tensions escalated on the Sarstoon River on Friday, September 12, 2025, as members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) were confronted by the Guatemalan Armed Forces (GAF) within Belizean waters.
The confrontation came just two days after Belize formally protested the illegal placement of a Guatemalan flag on Sarstoon Island.
Videos circulating from the incident show the BDF responding with professionalism and restraint in the face of provocation.
Belizean soldiers stood their ground, firmly asserting Belize’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while pointing out the clear violation of international law.
Despite their measured response, GAF personnel continued insisting that Belizean troops retreat to their base.
With only one vessel present, the BDF was visibly outnumbered by the Guatemalan navy and eventually withdrew to prevent further escalation.
