By Zoila Palma:  The Government of Belize and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) have officially launched a new BZ$8 million project aimed at strengthening climate resilience in coastal communities across the country. The initiative, titled “Enhancing the Resilience of Belize’s Coastal Communities to Climate Change Impacts,” was launched during a ceremony held Thursday at the Multipurpose Park in Dangriga.

Funded through the Adaptation Fund’s Regular Country Allocation funding window, the project is expected to benefit 27 coastal communities in the Belize, Corozal, Stann Creek, and Toledo districts. The program will directly impact more than 117,000 people by improving Belize’s ability to respond to climate-related threats affecting vulnerable coastal areas.

The initiative will also focus on strengthening national climate resilience through improved data collection and better decision-making systems. Six key institutions will help execute the project, including the National Climate Change Office, National Hydrological Service, National Meteorological Service, Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute, Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing, and the Dangriga Town Council.

The program will focus on four main areas: improving coastal land use, strengthening coastal vulnerability monitoring systems, supporting coastal protection and adaptation responses, and increasing awareness and capacity building for climate resilience. The measures are intended to support sustainable development while helping communities better prepare for climate risks.

Government officials and stakeholders attended the launch ceremony, including Andre Perez, Minister of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation; Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Area Representative for Dangriga; and PACT Executive Director Abil Castañeda. Representatives highlighted that the Coastal Project marks PACT’s third initiative with the Adaptation Fund since becoming accredited in 2011, reinforcing the organization’s growing role in climate adaptation efforts in Belize.
