By Breaking Belize News Staff: Just 16 days after celebrating his 22nd birthday, Gian Teck of Maskall Village was remanded to the Belize Central Prison on Thursday after changing his plea to guilty in a High Court trial for Unlawful Sexual Intercourse (USI) with a 14-year-old minor. Teck, who stood trial before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in a judge-alone matter without a jury, conceded to defeat on the fourth day of proceedings after Crown Counsel Kirk Brown, prosecuting on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), presented damning evidence and the testimony of the victim.
The trial, which commenced on Monday, September 28, 2026, hinged on the testimony of the virtual complainant, which was delivered in camera behind closed doors. According to agreed facts presented in court, the incident occurred on the night of Monday, June 5, 2023, when the 14-year-old victim visited Teck—who was 18 at the time—at his home.
The minor arrived on her bicycle, and the two went inside where Teck undressed her and engaged in sexual intercourse before she left around 1:00 a.m. the following morning. A medical examination conducted on June 29, 2023, by a doctor confirmed hymeneal tears classified as grievous harm, and during a caution interview that same day, Teck admitted to police that he had sexual intercourse with the minor three times at his residence, leading to his formal arrest on June 30, 2023.
This conviction comes months after Teck managed to avoid prosecution on separate sexual assault charges. On January 28, 2026, two counts of unlawful sexual intercourse against Teck were discontinued in the High Court before Justice Candace Nanton when the Crown entered a nolle prosequi after a victim from a May 2024 incident refused to testify, though Justice Nanton cautioned Teck at the time that the matter could be recalled in the future.
Following his guilty plea on Thursday, Justice Pilgrim revoked Teck’s bail and remanded him to the Belize Central Prison. Teck, who was represented in court by attorney Javier Williams, is scheduled to return to court on October 22, 2026, where Justice Pilgrim will hear mitigation pleas before handing down his sentence.
