By Breaking Belize News Staff: Thirty-five-year-old Belize City resident Garrick Hemmans has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with aggravated assault with a firearm in connection with a shooting incident on Rio Bravo Crescent.

Hemmans, a labourer of the Fabers Road area, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in Court #6 on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to a single charge of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Police allege that on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Hemmans intentionally and unlawfully assaulted a 32-year-old technician with a firearm.

According to police, the complainant reported that at around 7:28 p.m. he was standing in front of a yard on Rio Bravo Crescent when a maroon Nissan Murano approached from the direction of Tapir Street. He told investigators that the driver slowed the vehicle and that Hemmans, who was allegedly seated in the front passenger seat, pulled out a firearm and fired several shots in his direction.

The complainant reportedly ran behind a cement fence and escaped without injury. The vehicle then drove off in the direction of Fabers Road Extension.

Police processed the scene and reportedly recovered two 9mm Aguila-brand expended shells and a fragment. Investigators later located the Nissan Murano parked on Jimmy Dyer Street, where another 9mm Aguila-brand expended shell was reportedly found on the front passenger seat. The vehicle was impounded.

Hemmans was detained later that night and subsequently charged.

During Friday’s arraignment, Hemmans asked permission to address the court and began saying, “Two weeks ago, this young man…” before Senior Magistrate Dennison stopped him and cautioned that, because he was unrepresented, he should avoid making statements about the alleged incident that could potentially incriminate him.

Due to the firearm-related nature of the charge, bail was denied under the Crimes Control and Criminal Justice Act.

Hemmans was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until October 29, 2026.
