By Zoila Palma: The National Garifuna Council (NGC), Cayo Branch, in collaboration with the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council, officially launched the 2026 Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations on Sunday, November 1, with a flag-raising ceremony at the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Hall.
The ceremony, held at 3:00 p.m., marked the beginning of a month of activities celebrating Garifuna culture, heritage and traditions.
Following the ceremony, participants took part in a parade through the principal streets of San Ignacio and Santa Elena, bringing the celebrations to the community.
The event culminated at the Welcome Center, where the festivities continued with music provided by the Garifuna Collective. Mayor Earl Trapp joined residents and participants in celebrating the occasion.
The Cayo Branch of the National Garifuna Council has planned a calendar of activities throughout November under the theme, “Unity, Culture, Progress – The Future is Ours!”
The programme includes a solidarity mass and National Garifuna Pageant, Cultural Night at Falcon Field, a tribute to T.V. Ramos, Garifuna Awareness Day activities, and a fashion show at the Welcome Center. Other events include a Garifuna exhibition, drumming, a Hudut sale and a Punta and Paranda Explosion.
The celebrations will culminate on November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day, with traditional Yurumein at 6:00 a.m., followed by mass at 8:00 a.m. and activities at the Welcome Center, including a raffle at 5:00 p.m.
