By Zoila Palma:  Belize has lost one of its respected educators and public intellectuals with the passing of Dr. Dorian A. Barrow, a longtime lecturer at Galen University and Director of its STEM, AI, and Robotics Center.

Dr. Barrow, who was recently diagnosed with complications affecting his liver and kidneys, had been undergoing dialysis in recent months. A public blood donation appeal had also been launched to support his medical treatment.

Dr. Barrow earned his Ph.D. in Science Education from Florida State University in 1993 and dedicated decades to higher education in Belize. He lectured at Galen University, the University of the West Indies, and the University of Belize, where he also served as Academic Vice President and Provost.

At Galen University, he previously held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Education. His expertise in curriculum and instruction, as well as the physical sciences, particularly Physics and Chemistry, earned him widespread respect among students, colleagues, and the wider academic community.

Beyond academia, Dr. Barrow was a thoughtful commentator on national affairs and a regular contributor to Breaking Belize News, where he published opinion pieces on issues affecting Belize.

He was also interviewed by Breaking Belize News journalist Zoila Palma for the investigative feature Outpriced and Outnumbered: How Chinese-Owned Grocery Stores Are Reshaping Belize’s Economy, during which he discussed the implications of foreign investment in Belize.

Drawing on his research, including his article Chinese Assets in Belize, Dr. Barrow posed an important question about the country’s future: “What is the broader geopolitical significance of China’s expanding footprint in Latin America and the Caribbean?” His analysis helped enrich public discourse on economic development and international relations.

Breaking Belize News Chief Executive Officer Hugh O’Brien expressed sadness at Dr. Barrow’s passing, remembering him as an insightful thinker who willingly shared his knowledge with the public.

Palma also extended condolences to Dr. Barrow’s family, friends, colleagues, and former students. His passing marks the loss of an educator, scholar, and intellectual whose contributions to science education and national dialogue will be remembered for years to come.
