Galen University, in partnership with UNICEF, NICH, the Belize Film Commission, and the Belize Film Exchange, collaborated to host a stimulating film workshop entitled “Future Frames.”

The Future Frames workshop was designed to introduce filmmaking as a transformative medium, for youth involved in the Youth for Justice Project, an initiative bringing together participants from three rural communities-Gales Point, rural Toledo, and Succotz/Calla Creek. Commencing on 13-15 December, the workshop was held at T.R.E.E.S (Toucan Ridge Ecology and Education Society) and engaged 12 participants to critically reflect on their world and imagine brighter futures using film.

Led by Galen University’s Dr. André Habet and Research Director, Dr. Filiberto Penados, this two-day workshop was designed to empower young Belizeans by equipping them with foundational filmmaking skills. The initiative was funded by a UNICEF grant and supported by the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), and its film division, the Belize Film Commission.

A key highlight of “Future Frames” was the involvement of acclaimed Belizean American film director Samantha Aldana, founder of the non-profit film production company Mayalune Rising. Aldana led the workshop with the support of local film production team Feste Films and NICH representatives, who provided hands-on guidance in storytelling, cinematography, and production techniques.

“This partnership is more than a workshop; it’s an incubator for the next generation of Belizean filmmakers,” said Dr. Habet. “We hope that through filmmaking, these young participants can represent Belize’s unique stories and perspectives on a global stage.”

“We are delighted to partner with the Belize Film Commission to build the capacities of youths to participate in Belize’s burgeoning film industry” says Alison Parker, UNICEF Representative for Belize. UNICEF has a long history of using films to create compelling content for impactful advocacy on child rights themes. As Belize explores this new frontier, we are excited to expand our partnerships to support young people to use film to share their unique narratives, especially for those living in climate and crisis-affected vulnerable areas.”

The “Future Frames” workshop was the first step in an ongoing collaboration. In February 2025, Ms. Aldana will work with the Belize Film Commission on a series of advanced workshops, further nurturing the talents of Youth for Justice participants and other attendees, broadening their horizons in the art of filmmaking.
