By Breaking Belize News Staff: With the High Court scheduled to close for a six-week break starting August 1, Justice Derick Sylvester is working to wrap up all pending matters on his docket. Among those are the cases of four convicted individuals—three men and one woman—who are awaiting sentencing for serious crimes ranging from rape to murder and manslaughter.
On Monday, all four appeared before Justice Sylvester, but their cases were adjourned to July 10, 2025, due to outstanding documents still being prepared, including Social Inquiry Reports and other sentencing materials. Until then, all four remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison.
Patrick Robinson, 43 – Convicted rapist
Robinson, a businessman and funeral parlour owner, was found guilty of three out of five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. The court heard that he began sexually abusing the victim from the age of 11, with repeated incidents when she was 13. He is facing sentencing for a crime that has shocked many in the community due to its severity and the young age of the victim.
Jason McKenzie, 33 – Convicted murderer
McKenzie pleaded guilty to the 2023 execution-style murder of James Dorian Escarpeta, who was shot in the head on West Street in Belize City. Surveillance footage captured McKenzie walking up to the victim, shooting him, and fleeing the scene—evidence that ultimately led to his plea. His sentencing was delayed pending final documentation.
Malcolm Matthew Muschamp, 25 – Guilty of Manslaughter
Initially charged with murder, Muschamp pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in the shooting death of David Tzac. The January 2022 incident on Antelope Street Extension also left a 14-year-old boy injured. Muschamp was also previously acquitted in the Magistrate’s Court of related firearm and ammunition offenses. His sentencing is also on hold as the court awaits key documentation.
Shantell Williams, 30 – Guilty of Manslaughter
Williams was convicted in March 2025 for the manslaughter of her common-law husband, Louis Adolphus, during a domestic dispute at their home on Curassow Street on August 2, 2022. Adolphus died after being stabbed once in the neck. Williams’ sentencing is likewise postponed until the court receives her Social Inquiry Report.
Sentencing
Justice Sylvester emphasized his intent to finalize all pending sentencing hearings before the judiciary enters its annual recess. With just four weeks remaining, the July 10 hearings will be pivotal in determining the fate of these four individuals—each convicted of violent and deeply personal crimes.
The judiciary remains under heavy case loads, and delays in document processing continue to present challenges as judges strive to balance timeliness with due process.
