By Horace Palacio: Henry Charles Usher of the People’s United Party (PUP) has been declared the winner of the Fort George constituency after running unopposed in the upcoming general elections.
Usher secured the seat after United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Melvin Hewlett failed to appear for nomination day, leaving no challengers. With no candidates from Tracy Panton’s Alliance for Democracy (AFD) or independent contenders, Usher automatically retained his position as area representative.
Reflecting on his victory, Usher described the moment as humbling, acknowledging the trust placed in him by the people of Fort George. “As I said just now, it is an awesome feeling; it’s a humbling feeling to know that the hopes, the ambitions, the dreams of so many people are represented by you, by an individual and I never take it for granted,” he stated.
Usher emphasized his commitment to serving his constituents, noting that his work continues beyond election day. “It’s not just about election day, it’s not only about a campaign, it’s about working very hard and continuing to make sure that you do your best for the area,” he added.
Returning Officer Annisa Perdomo confirmed that with no opposing candidates, Usher was officially declared the winner. She described the situation as unprecedented, stating, “This is the first time that I know of that a seat has been uncontested.”
As the general elections approach, Usher expressed his gratitude to the people of Fort George and reiterated his dedication to improving the lives of his constituents.
