By Zoila Palma: Today, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) issued a statement saying that it is deeply saddened to confirm that last night, following the Northern Zone High Performance Program training session, an FFB coaster transporting youth footballers and technical staff was involved in a serious traffic accident along the San Victor Road while returning the players to their homes.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident occurred after the coaster collided with a parked cane truck.
FFB noted that some of the young footballers and members of the technical staff sustained minor injuries and received medical attention.
Miriam Villamil, NSC Corozal Coordinator and High Performance Coach, who was seated in the front section of the vehicle, sustained severe injuries and became trapped inside the coaster following the impact.
FFB said that through the courageous and swift efforts of the Belize Police Department, emergency responders, nearby residents, and all those who assisted at the scene, Villamil was successfully removed from the wreckage and rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.
At this time, she is urgently in need of O+ blood donation.
“The Football Federation of Belize humbly appeals to the wider football family and the general public to assist in any way possible by donating blood and keeping Ms. Villamil and all those affected in your prayers. Persons willing to assist are encouraged to contact the relevant hospital authorities,” FFB expressed.
The FFB also extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to Villamil, her family, the young players, technical staff, and everyone impacted by this accident.
The FFB also thanked the police officers, medical personnel, emergency responders, and community members whose immediate response and selfless actions played a critical role in the rescue efforts and care of those involved.
“The Federation continues to closely monitor the situation and remains fully committed to providing support to Villamil, the players, staff, and their families during this extremely difficult time,” the FFB added.
The National Sports Council of Belize also joined the sporting family to extend their heartfelt support and prayers to Villamil and her family.
“Our thoughts and prayers are also with all the young footballers, technical staff, and families affected during this difficult time.
We also keep in our prayers those who sustained injuries and wish them a full and speedy recovery,” the Sports council said.
