By Breaking Belize News Staff: Jermaine Bernardez, a 23-year-old fisherman from Lords Bank, Ladyville, was fined $1,000 on Thursday after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply. Bernardez was found with 105 grams of cannabis during a police search at his residence on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
Appearing unrepresented in Belize City Magistrate’s Court #4, Bernardez admitted to possessing the cannabis but claimed it was for his personal use during a three-week fishing trip to an island. He argued that the quantity was intended to last him for that period.
Despite his explanation, the magistrate accepted his guilty plea for possession with intent to supply, citing the amount of cannabis, which exceeded the 60-gram threshold for simple possession.
Bernardez, a first-time drug offender, received a non-custodial sentence. He was fined $1,000, plus a $5 court cost, which he must pay by May 30, 2025, or face three months imprisonment.
According to police reports, a house search at #4 Lords Bank led to the discovery of a yellow plastic bag containing the cannabis. Bernardez, who was present during the search, was arrested and taken to Ladyville Police Station, where the cannabis was weighed.
