By Aaron Humes: The strong currents of the Swasey River near San Juan (Cowpen) claimed two lives on Saturday evening.
It happened as a father, 45-year-old Thomas Cal, was trying to save his drowning son, Elroy, 17, but both went under in view of other family members.
ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch, told reporters on Monday, “I do not know if there were any safety warnings; however, the river is deep and there are strong currents in that river.”
With the assistance of villagers, their bodies were retrieved 3 hours after they had drowned; a post-mortem examination has been scheduled.
