By Horace Palacio: A father and son from Carmelita Village were hospitalized on Saturday night after being stabbed during an altercation while selling alcohol at a roadside stall in Orange Walk Town, police said.
Francis Bustamante Sr., 48, and his son, Francis Bustamante Jr., 28, both sustained stab wounds to the neck and chest area during the incident, which occurred at approximately 7:50 p.m. on Belize Corozal Road, in front of Zeta Auto Parts.
Initial investigations reveal that the two men were selling beer under a tent when a male customer, described as dark-skinned and under the influence of alcohol, approached to make a purchase. An argument broke out between the customer and Bustamante Jr., during which the customer reportedly pulled out a black-handled pocket knife and stabbed Bustamante Jr. in the neck and chest.
Upon witnessing his son being attacked, Bustamante Sr. intervened and was also stabbed by the same individual. The assailant fled the scene before police arrived.
Both men were transported to the Northern Regional Hospital (NRH), where Bustamante Sr. is listed in stable condition, while his son remains in critical condition. Police officers visited the scene, and a black-handled pocket knife was recovered as evidence.
Several witnesses have been identified, though statements have yet to be recorded. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
