By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man who admitted to knocking down a young call center agent with his vehicle and fleeing the scene without rendering assistance was fined in court on Monday after pleading guilty to three traffic offenses.

Emerson Rupert Anderson, 25, of Belize City, appeared unrepresented before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2, where he was charged with failing to render aid, driving without a valid driver’s license, driving without due care and attention, and driving without third-party risk insurance.

The insurance charge was later withdrawn after Anderson produced proof that the grey Dodge Journey van was in fact insured.

The charges arose from a hit-and-run accident on Sunday, April 5, 2026, along Mahogany Street, where Raven Cook, 22, a call center agent, was struck while riding her bicycle.

Police say Cook was cycling toward Oleander Street around 7:00 a.m. when, at the corner of Evergreen and Mahogany Streets, a silver vehicle approached from behind the WASA compound and collided with her.

Cook reported that the impact knocked her off her bicycle, causing her to slam onto the pavement while her bicycle was flung across the street. The vehicle reportedly stopped briefly on Zericote Street, but the driver then sped away without offering any help.

Police responded to the scene and, after Cook complained of severe pain, she was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Investigators later reviewed video footage of the collision, which showed the vehicle stopping a short distance from the scene before fleeing. The footage led police to identify and detain Anderson on Friday, April 10, 2026.

In court, Anderson pleaded guilty to failing to render aid, driving without a valid license, and driving without due care and attention.

For those three offenses, the Senior Magistrate imposed fines of $100 each, plus $5 court costs on each count, bringing the total to $315.

He was ordered to pay the full amount by June 30, 2026, in default of which he will serve one month in prison. The court ordered that the default sentences run concurrently rather than consecutively.

By the end of the hearing, Anderson left court owing the fines but having avoided immediate imprisonment.
