By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Police Department has confirmed that possible criminal charges against former minister Elvin Penner are now under investigation following an incident involving explosive materials.
ASP Stacy Smith stated that investigators have already received statements regarding the matter and are reviewing them carefully under the Dangerous Goods Act to determine whether the legal elements of any offences exist.
The case stems from allegations that Penner removed explosive-related items from the Baldy Beacon area of Mountain Pine Ridge, where military personnel and explosive ordnance disposal teams were conducting operations connected to old munitions and hazardous materials.
Penner has insisted that he believed the items had been abandoned and claimed he moved them because of concerns that a nearby fire could trigger a dangerous explosion.
Officials have not confirmed whether formal charges will be laid, but police say the investigation remains active as they continue reviewing evidence and witness statements.
