By Zoila Palma:  The cost of maintaining a household in Belize increased in September, with housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels recording a 4.4 percent rise compared to September 2025, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).

The SIB’s September Consumer Price Index report identifies higher electricity costs as a major contributor to the increase.

The report attributes the rise to an increase in the price per kilowatt-hour and the introduction of the Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA) during the year.

Water bills also increased over the 12-month period. For a household consuming 4,500 gallons of water per month, the cost rose from $86.38 in September 2025 to $91.13 in September 2026, an increase of $4.75.

Home rental costs were also higher, increasing by 2.3 percent compared to September of last year.

The combined increases in electricity, water and rent contributed to the housing category becoming one of the leading drivers of Belize’s overall annual inflation rate of 4.7 percent.
