By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s Derrick Chavarria put up a brilliant performance on Sunday to win gold in the U23 category of the Caribbean Elite Men’s Road Race, completing a championship double after his victory in Saturday’s U23 Individual Time Trial (ITT). The back-to-back titles mark a historic achievement for the young Belizean cyclist, who displayed tactical maturity, endurance, and national pride across two demanding events.

Racing alongside the elite field in the 156-kilometer road race, Chavarria remained in the lead group throughout. Though the overall elite podium was claimed by Rudy Alexander Germoso of the Dominican Republic (1st place), Oscar Quiroz of Belize (2nd place), and LE NY Benjamin Lanai of Guadeloupe (3rd place), Chavarria crossed the line as the top U23 rider.

Quiroz’s silver medal in the elite category added to Belize’s celebration, as he finished just behind Germoso and ahead of Benjamin in a thrilling sprint down the Philip Goldson Highway. The result marks Quiroz’s second elite podium at the Caribbean Championships, having placed third in 2021.

Chavarria’s consistency and race intelligence stood out across the weekend. On Saturday, he dominated the U23 ITT. On Sunday, he matched the pace of the region’s elite, attacked decisively, and claimed his second gold in front of the home crowd.

His triumph in Belize builds on his strong showing in Guyana in 2024, where he finished sixth overall and claimed silver in the Caribbean U23 Road Race. That performance signaled his rise among the region’s top young cyclists—and this weekend, he confirmed it.

  • Oscar Quiroz: Silver in elite road race, previously 3rd in 2021
  • Jyven Gonzalez & Jaylen Briceño: Key contributors in breakaways and chase groups

With Chavarria’s double gold and Quiroz’s elite silver, Belize’s cycling team has made a powerful statement on home soil, displaying depth, resilience, and rising talent. The 2025 Caribbean Cycling Championships will be remembered not only for fierce competition, but for the emergence of a new generation of Belizean champions.
