Is Elluide Miller being pressured to back out of the PUP Mayoral Convention?

By Breaking Belize News Staff: What was expected to be a straightforward contest for the People’s United Party (PUP) mayoral nomination in Belize City is now being overshadowed by reports of behind-the-scenes efforts aimed at avoiding a convention altogether.

Sources to Breaking Belize News indicate that senior party members have approached mayoral hopeful Elluide Miller to determine whether he would consider withdrawing his candidacy, despite having publicly submitted his application to contest the position.

The reported outreach comes only days after both Miller and fellow contender Allan Pollard Jr. formally entered the race, setting the stage for what many party supporters viewed as a healthy democratic contest.

The development also appears to contrast with the public messaging that has surrounded the campaign in recent weeks.

Pollard has repeatedly maintained that he welcomes a convention, publicly stating that any party member wishing to contest should be free to do so because “it’s a democratic party.” He has also insisted that he neither expects nor requires endorsements, famously remarking, “I don’t need an endorsement. We are working.”

Throughout the campaign, Pollard’s supporters have argued that the support of seven city councillors, who have publicly backed Miller, carries little significance when compared to approximately 700 delegates who will ultimately decide the convention.

However, sources now indicate to Breaking Belize News that efforts are underway to persuade Miller to reconsider his candidacy before delegates have an opportunity to cast their votes.

If those reports are accurate, they raise an obvious political question: if a convention was always welcomed, why seek to prevent one from taking place?

The reported outreach also follows weeks of increasingly heated rhetoric within the race. Public exchanges between supporters of both camps have intensified, with political alliances and endorsements becoming central talking points in what has rapidly evolved into one of the most closely watched internal contests in recent PUP history.

As party delegates await the next move, the question remains whether they will ultimately decide the party’s mayoral candidate at the convention—or whether the contest will be settled before a single ballot is cast.
