By Zoila Palma: The Department of the Environment (DOE) is partnering with bus operators and transportation authorities to strengthen efforts to reduce littering along Belize’s highways and main roads.
The initiative, being implemented under the SICA AZUL Project, forms part of the DOE’s National Anti-Littering Campaign under the theme “Our Belize, Our Responsibility – Bin It!” and aims to improve waste disposal practices within the public transportation sector.
As part of the initiative, the DOE will host a handover ceremony on November 6, 2026, at the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Climate Change’s auditorium at the Green Complex Building in Belmopan.
During the event, garbage bins and public awareness flyers will be handed over to the National Bus Company and the Belize Bus Association for placement inside buses, encouraging passengers to dispose of their waste responsibly rather than littering along transportation routes.
The Department of Transport will also receive appropriately labelled garbage bins for bus terminals to encourage waste separation and proper disposal.
DOE noted that making bins more accessible, while distributing public awareness materials, is intended to promote long-term behavioural change and remind commuters, bus operators and terminal managers that keeping Belize clean is a shared responsibility.
The DOE is calling on the public to support the “Bin It” campaign by using designated garbage bins and helping keep buses, terminals, roadsides and communities clean.
