By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belizeans who rely on Cuban doctors and nurses at public health facilities can expect to keep seeing them, even as the formal brigade programme ends.
Government has announced that the agreement with Cuba covering the Cuban Medical Brigade, in place since 1990, will not be renewed.
Instead of working under a government to government arrangement, each Cuban medical professional will now be offered an individual contract of employment directly with the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
That change will allow them to stay in Belize and continue providing care.
For 36 years, Cuban medical professionals have worked across Belize, including in rural and underserved communities, helping to fill gaps in the country’s health workforce.
The government did not say why the agreement is ending. In recent years, several countries in the region have reviewed similar arrangements with Cuba amid international scrutiny of how Cuban medical missions are structured and paid.
Government says it remains firmly committed to delivering quality medical services to all Belizeans through both local and foreign health professionals.
