By Breaking Belize News Staff: In the latest Senate meeting, Leader of Government Business Eamon Courtenay raised concerns about the upcoming International Court of Justice (ICJ) proceedings, warning that Belize may soon face significant legal expenses as it defends its territorial integrity against Guatemala.
“Madam President, we expect, we don’t know for certain, but we expect sometime this year we will be notified of the date for the hearing of our cases at the ICJ,” Courtenay stated. “That will cause us to spend significant funds in order to ensure that we have and continue to have the best representation in order for us to have success in both cases.”
Courtenay did not specify a date but indicated that preparations are ongoing and that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working to ensure Belize’s legal team is ready.
The statement comes amid broader budget discussions in which Courtenay outlined areas of economic growth and trade negotiations with countries such as El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Taiwan, and the EU. However, the looming ICJ case remains a critical and costly matter for the country.
