By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues its pursuit of a Schengen visa waiver for Belize, aiming to join other Caribbean and Central American nations already enjoying visa-free access to most of Europe. During Senate proceedings, Eamon Courtenay, the Leader of Government Business, gave an update on the negotiations.
Courtenay confirmed that Belize has met all the technical qualifications for the visa waiver. “This has been confirmed to both Minister Fonseca and the Prime Minister—that Belize ticks all the boxes required by the European Union for the Schengen waiver,” he told Senators.
However, Courtenay said the delay is political. “The current climate in the developed world is very anti-migration,” he explained. “The idea of opening up borders and allowing citizens of another country into the EU is sensitive. Perhaps now is not the time to actually put that to a vote.”
Still, Courtenay stressed that Belize is strategically engaging with EU member states to gain support. “We are advancing that process with a very intense campaign,” he said, noting that friendly European countries are being lobbied to champion Belize’s case within the EU Parliament and Commission.
There was no timeline given, but Courtenay remains hopeful that conditions will eventually align to make the visa waiver a reality for Belizean passport holders.
