By Aaron Humes: Interdicted Police Officer, Ryan Bainton, took responsibility for stealing an impounded motorcycle from the Hattieville Police Station, pleading guilty to a charge of theft on Monday.

While on trial for the theft captured on surveillance cameras around the station in 2023, and facing overwhelming evidence, he changed his initial not-guilty plea to guilty.

The Guinea Grass Village, Orange Walk District resident told the Magistrate, “I believe that God has spoken to me to be a man and do the right thing. I’ve seen whereby I’ve deprived these gentlemen from serving our country and protecting our citizens for having to be here today for theft as a police officer. I should have been a grown man and know right from wrong. I no longer want to hold anyone back. I understand there [are] consequences for every action, however, I just wanted to do the right thing. This is the first time I’ve ever been in a situation like this and I’ve truly learned a lesson. I do apologize for wasting anyone’s time.”

Sentencing for Bainton takes place today, Tuesday, as he asked to call one character witness on his behalf, namely his father.

Inspector Mark Bernard, Deputy Officer Commanding Hattieville Police reported that on June 16, 2023, a black 150 Lifan brand Motorcycle with no vehicle identification number and no serial number was brought in by a constable after checking into a minor road traffic accident within Hattieville Village. The cycle was impounded at the Hattieville Police Station Compound because it had no proper ownership document. The cycle was then labeled as found property because no documents could be presented for it by anyone, hence it became the property of the Government of Belize.

Nearly two months later, the motorcycle had gone missing from the Barracks area where it was parked, and surveillance showed Bainton removing the motorcycle without lawful authority while he was on shift the preceding night.
