By Zoila Palma:  The latest data released by the Statistical Institute of Belize shows that consumer prices increased by 1.0% in May 2025, compared to the same month last year.

The uptick was largely fueled by higher prices in the ‘Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ category, which recorded a 2.0% inflation rate.

Food prices rose by 0.9%, mainly due to increased costs for cereal products and fruits.

Bread and bakery goods were up by 2.5%, while fruit prices saw a significant jump of 7.8%, with notable increases in limes, oranges, and pineapples.

However, the price of vegetables declined overall, dropping by 4.7%.

This decrease was led by lower prices for items like tomatoes and cilantro.

Despite the general decline in vegetable prices, certain products bucked the trend:

  • Lettuce rose from $3.58 to $4.62 per pound, marking a sharp 29.1% increase
  • Okra climbed from $3.29 to $3.81 per pound, up 16.0%
  • Broccoli or cauliflower went from $5.00 to $5.33 per pound, an increase of 6.5%

Meanwhile, the ‘Non-Alcoholic Beverages’ sub-category saw a substantial 8.2% rise year-over-year. The increase was driven by higher costs for:

  • Fruit and vegetable juices (up 14%)
  • Purified water in one-gallon and five-gallon containers (up 9%)
  • Soft drinks (up 8.8%)
