Guatemala earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw against Panama in a tense third-round World Cup Qualifier on Monday night at the Rommel Fernández Stadium in Panama City, thanks to a resilient defensive effort and a standout performance from goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen.
Óscar Santis gave Guatemala the lead in the 35th minute, finishing coolly after a quick counterattack. Panama responded swiftly—Carlos Harvey equalized just two minutes later with a composed header from inside the box.
Despite dominating possession (71.5%) and firing 18 shots, Panama couldn’t find a winner. Hagen made five crucial saves to preserve the point, frustrating the home side and keeping Guatemala alive in Group A.
The result leaves Panama with two points from two draws, while Guatemala earn their first point after losing their opener.
In the night’s other fixture, Suriname stunned El Salvador 2–1 in San Salvador, climbing to the top of the group with four points. With all four teams still in contention, the standings remain tight and unpredictable heading into the next round.
