By Horace Palacio: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has officially dismissed a police corporal whose name was found in a note linking him to drug cartels. The note was discovered beside the body of Raheem Usher, found dead at the entrance to San Antonio Village on February 27th. In it, multiple names were listed—two police officers among them—raising serious concerns about possible police-cartel connections.

The officer, who has over two decades of service, was invited by the Commissioner to justify why he should not be removed from the force. Despite legal representation from attorney Andrew Bennett, Commissioner Williams was not swayed. In a letter dated March 28, Williams exercised his authority to discharge the officer, citing the severe reputational damage such allegations pose to the Belize Police Department.

In a strong statement, Williams reaffirmed his zero-tolerance approach to corruption within the ranks, saying, “You can’t be cartel and be police at the same time—you have to decide.” The officer in question has the option to appeal to the Belize Advisory Council.
