By Breaking Belize News Staff: Effective immediately Monday, July 6, Belizeans will pay more for chicken after the Belize Poultry Association announced a 12-cent per pound increase in the price of whole chicken.

In a press release, the Association said the adjustment is due to the continued high cost of production inputs, including grains such as corn and soybean, fuel, and premixes. The BPA said prices for other poultry products will also increase depending on the cuts or processed products.

“This adjustment is deemed necessary in the light of the current prices of inputs we are facing,” the Association said, adding that the public may contact 822-3221 or 615-9694 for further information on the new adjusted prices.

The latest adjustment comes just months after chicken prices increased by six cents per pound in March 2026. At that time, BPA Manager Armando Cowo told 7News that the increase had been under consideration for about six months and was the first poultry price increase in about five years.

SIB figures also show that chicken prices had already been trending upward before this latest increase. In May 2026, the average price of whole chicken stood at $3.33 per pound, up from $3.22 in May 2025. Chicken cuts rose from $3.70 to $3.81 per pound, chicken legs from $3.61 to $3.78, and chicken wings from $6.86 to $7.16.

The wider cost of living has also been rising. According to the Statistical Institute of Belize, the national inflation rate for May 2026 was 4.3 percent, while prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages were up 1.9 percent for the first five months of the year compared to the same period in 2025.
