By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A 2016 letter from the Roman Catholic Chancery of Belize shows that the Catholic Church supported the introduction of the HPV vaccine for girls attending Catholic public schools in Belize.

The letter, signed by Bishop Dorick M. Wright and Auxiliary Bishop Christopher Glancy, explained that the Church had reviewed medical and Catholic ethical guidance surrounding the vaccine before deciding to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and the Belize Cancer Society.

Church leaders noted that the HPV vaccine was already being widely used internationally and was intended to help protect women from cervical cancer. The document also referenced Catholic medical literature which found the vaccine to be ethically acceptable.

The Diocese emphasized that vaccination would not be mandatory and stated that parents would still have the final decision on whether their child would receive the vaccine.
