By Zoila Palma:  On April 27, 2026, the Caribbean Tourism Organization opened its Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026 in Belize under the theme, “Tourism in Full Color: Integrating Blue, Green, Orange, and Beyond Economies into Sustainable Planning and Development.”

The event brings together regional leaders and industry stakeholders to chart a more sustainable and inclusive path forward for Caribbean tourism.

Tourism officials delivered a strong, unified message on the need to move beyond traditional models.

Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler emphasized building a tourism sector that is resilient, people-centered, and environmentally responsible.

Speakers highlighted priorities including advancing regenerative tourism, securing climate financing, and integrating the region’s blue, green, and orange economies.

They stressed that growth must be intentional and sustainable, with natural and cultural assets placed at the core of development. Collaboration between public and private sectors was also identified as critical to delivering real benefits for Caribbean communities.

Day one concluded with a focus on inclusivity during the “Embedding the Purple Economy” panel, which underscored the importance of community participation and diverse identities in tourism.

Delegates also heard from the owners of Chaa Creek, who shared their ecotourism journey, and explored exhibits from local artisans and businesses.

The conference continues with further discussions and activities on day two.
