By Zoila Palma: On April 27, 2026, the Caribbean Tourism Organization opened its Sustainable Tourism Conference 2026 in Belize under the theme, “Tourism in Full Color: Integrating Blue, Green, Orange, and Beyond Economies into Sustainable Planning and Development.”
The gathering has brought together regional leaders and tourism stakeholders to shape a more sustainable and inclusive future for the Caribbean’s tourism industry.
A key session titled “Green Tourism Pathways” shifted the focus from policy discussions to practical implementation, asking how governments and industry players can translate sustainability commitments into real-world results.
Panelists noted that while frameworks and strategies are already in place across the region, the real challenge lies in execution.
Discussions emphasized that effective policies must be enforceable, measurable, and supported by incentives, while community involvement must go beyond consultation to genuine ownership.
Speakers also highlighted the importance of collaboration among public, private, and community stakeholders, alongside education and capacity building to equip people with the tools needed to act.
Examples from across the Caribbean showcased progress in areas such as renewable energy, marine conservation, and community-based tourism.
The consensus among participants was clear: while policy sets the direction, meaningful change depends on people, partnerships, and accountability to turn sustainability goals into tangible outcomes.
