Can you generate your own electricity in Belize? Public forum explains how

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Homes and businesses interested in producing their own electricity can learn more at a public forum today in Belize City.

The Distributed Generation Forum, hosted by the Ministry of National Security, Energy and Ports, runs from 10am to 1pm at the Caribbean Motors showroom on the Philip Goldson Highway. It will also be livestreamed.

Distributed generation refers to electricity produced from smaller sources closer to where it is used, such as solar panels on homes or businesses. Some systems run independently of the national grid, while others can be connected to it, subject to requirements.

CEO Leroy Almendarez said the forum was organized because the public keeps asking about it.

“We know for a fact, like I mentioned, that 11 megawatts at 13 cents Belize, that’s the cheapest source you could think about,” he said.

Representatives from BEL, the Public Utilities Commission and the Ministry will sit on the panel. Viewers watching online can send in questions for the panelists to answer.

Almendarez said the discussion will cover how the regulatory framework works, the compliance process and the importance of safety standards.

“We don’t want to create hazards for people who believe, you know, you just go and set these things up,” he said.
