By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City call center agent was fined $355 on Thursday after pleading guilty to possession of 0.2 grams of cocaine.
Edgar Rodolfo Melendez, 30, of Belama Phase 4, Belize City, appeared unrepresented before Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #5, where he was read a single charge of possession of a controlled drug.
Police alleged that on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Melendez was found in possession of 0.2 grams of cocaine.
Melendez pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that he had been introduced to the drug by a friend. He explained that he was off from work that day when a friend called and asked him to accompany him on errands because it was his son’s birthday.
According to Melendez, his friend later offered him the cocaine. He told the court that when his friend dropped him off that night, he forgot he still had the drug in his possession.
For his guilty plea, Melendez, a first-time offender, was given a non-custodial sentence. He was fined $350 plus a $5 cost of court, which he must pay by August 31, 2026, or serve three months in prison.
