By Aaron Humes: Cabinet’s meeting held on June 24 featured significant discussions concerning ongoing negotiations with labor unions, healthcare initiatives, and economic policies aimed at bolstering the country’s development.

One of the key topics was the response from the Belize National Teachers Union and the Association of Public Service Senior Managers which rejected the government’s proposed phased approach for an 8.5 percent salary increase along with two increments. The unions have since met with the Ministerial Subcommittee yesterday, Thursday, to discuss the government’s counter-proposal. The government remains committed to achieving a fair resolution to this dispute. Health Minister Kevin Bernard informed the Cabinet about a trade dispute announced following unsuccessful pension negotiations at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority. The authority is seeking intervention from the Minister of Labour to address the matter.

The Cabinet also received updates on the formulation of a new Industrial Strategy designed to enhance Belize’s economic performance through green and blue industrial policies. Developed with the help of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), this strategy aims to support technology transfer and training to bolster Belize’s industrial capacity.

Additionally, the Cabinet welcomed updates regarding the National Digital Strategy for Belize, which targets a comprehensive transformation of the health sector in collaboration with international partners, including the World Health Organization and the Inter-American Development Bank.

On the regulatory front, the Cabinet approved the National Land Use Policy for Belize 2025, which focuses on sustainable land management and aims to minimize disaster risks. They also recommended the introduction of a Subscription Motion to increase Belize’s stake in the Central American Bank for Economic Development (CABEI), thereby enhancing access to development financing.

The meeting concluded with recommendations for amendments to the Education Rules Act 2025 and the School Teachers’ Pensions Act 2025, ensuring the government’s full financial support to government-aided schools over the next five years.

In observance of National HIV Testing Day on June 27, the Cabinet urged Belizeans to participate in testing as a preventive measure against the spread of HIV. Additionally, citizens are reminded to prioritize road safety by driving carefully and wearing seatbelts.
