By Breaking Belize News Staff: Evan Daniel Cain, a 31-year-old part-time bus conductor from Belize City, is counting his blessings after narrowly avoiding a three-year mandatory prison sentence for aggravated assault on a traffic officer. Instead, Cain was fined $1,305 by the court, following his guilty plea and a heartfelt apology.

Cain, also known as “Sweet Buoy Cain,” had been remanded to the Belize Central Prison for six days after pushing Traffic Officer Kenrick Deshield off a bus on November 26, 2024. The incident occurred while Officer Deshield was carrying out duties to address traffic violations on a bus with excessive standees.

During his court appearance, Cain apologized directly to Officer Deshield, stating, “I am sorry I interrupted you while you were doing your duties. I understand I made an error. It won’t happen again.”

The presiding magistrate acknowledged the seriousness of Cain’s actions, noting that the offense carried a mandatory three-year prison term by law. However, she opted for a non-custodial sentence, considering Cain’s six days in prison, his lack of prior convictions, his remorse, and his open apology.

The court also highlighted aggravating factors, including the calculated nature of the act, the use of physical force, and the potential for serious injury to the officer. Cain was ordered to pay $1,300 in fines by March 4, 2025, or face one year in prison.
