BTIA warns Belize’s tourism future is at risk

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Tourism Industry Association is calling for an immediate moratorium on all mining and dredging activities in Placencia Lagoon and Ambergris Caye amid growing environmental concerns.

In a strongly worded press release issued this week, BTIA said Belize’s fragile marine ecosystems, mangroves, reefs and lagoons are facing increasing pressure from dredging, coastal alteration and environmental degradation.

The organization warned that Belize’s tourism industry depends heavily on the protection of the country’s natural resources and said unchecked development could threaten not only the environment but also the livelihoods of thousands of Belizeans who rely on tourism.

BTIA is now demanding stronger environmental enforcement, comprehensive environmental reviews and greater public consultation before any further activities continue in these sensitive areas.

The association also expressed support for the growing community-led petition movement in Placencia calling for stronger protections for the lagoon and surrounding ecosystems.
