By Breaking Belize News Staff: Former Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley has issued a stark warning that continued public frustration with Belize’s political system could eventually result in chaos and political violence if meaningful reforms are not undertaken.
During an appearance on Channel 7’s Uncut, Bradley argued that Belizeans are becoming increasingly frustrated with what he described as a lack of meritocracy, corruption, money politics and limited opportunities for qualified people to enter public life.
“Before we have chaos, and before we have mass political violence, because that’s where we’re headed,” Bradley said, while also warning about continued emigration by educated and qualified Belizeans frustrated with the system.
Bradley did not point to any specific threat or imminent act of political violence. His comments were made as part of a broader argument that Belize’s political institutions and parties need reform and that the country requires a strong and functioning opposition.
He also argued that prolonged political dominance by one party could weaken democratic accountability, saying Belize needs an opposition capable of challenging the Government and offering voters an alternative.
The UDP enters the 2027 municipal election cycle from a weak municipal position. In the March 2024 municipal elections, the PUP won 61 of the country’s 67 municipal seats, while the UDP won six, all in San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
