By Horace Palacio: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is holding its long-anticipated National Party Council Meeting today, led by Opposition Leader Tracy Panton. While the meeting marks a formal step in the party’s rebuilding efforts, talk of constitutional changes is already casting a shadow over the gathering.
At the heart of the discussion is a proposed amendment that would allow any party member—not just elected representatives in the National Assembly—to run for party leadership. The proposal has not yet been formally tabled but has already sparked buzz and speculation.
“There are people that are passing a resolution forward to amend the constitution so that anyone can offer themselves to be leader,” said former UDP leader Shyne Barrow earlier this week.
Tracy Panton acknowledged the push, stating, “What will happen moving forward is certainly a comprehensive review of the constitution. It could go as long as six months.”
She assured party members that the review would include proper consultation and emphasized that constitutional reform is now among the party’s top priorities.
