Garel, Country Director for World Pediatrics in Belize, suffered a stroke on July 28 caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm. Because the specialized neurosurgical care she urgently requires is not available in Belize, she was transported to Guatemala, where she remains in critical condition.
The news comes barely a week after World Pediatrics celebrated her extraordinary 20 years of service as Country Director, honoring the countless children and families whose lives she has touched. In its message sharing news of her condition, the organization wrote that Garel “has spent decades moving mountains to help children access lifesaving care,” and that it is now standing with its beloved colleague as she faces an unimaginable medical crisis.
Her family and friends have created a GoFundMe campaign, titled Support Milagro Garel’s Emergency Medical Care, to help cover her transportation, surgery, intensive care and hospitalization. World Pediatrics notes that the fundraiser is independently organized by Garel’s family and friends, and that the organization is sharing it in support but is not involved in collecting or managing donations.
Members of the public who wish to contribute can find the campaign on GoFundMe under her name, and are encouraged to donate, share, and keep Milagro and her family in their thoughts.
Few Belizeans have done more, more quietly, for the country’s sick children. Now the country has a chance to return the kindness.
