Belizean shares horrifying experience across the border in Chetumal

By Horace Palacio: A Belizean citizen is sharing a harrowing experience that occurred during a recent trip to Chetumal, Mexico. The individual, who wishes to remain anonymous, describes a frightening encounter on the road back to Belize that highlights potential dangers for travelers crossing the border.

On Wednesday, May 1st, the Belizean citizen visited Chetumal for a doctor’s appointment. Upon returning home around 10 pm, they noticed an unusually early closure of many businesses in the city, creating an eerie “ghost town” atmosphere.

After refueling at the last gas station on the outskirts of Chetumal, the individual began the journey back to Belize. Soon, they observed a motorcycle behind their car and signaling aggressively with its headlights. This continued as they passed the Maya Train construction area.

Fearing for their safety, and with no police presence in sight, the Belizean citizen accelerated towards the Subteniente Lopez border crossing. As they neared the border, the motorcycle abruptly turned back towards Chetumal.

Though relieved to have escaped the situation, the Belizean citizen remains shaken by the experience. The identity and motivations of the motorcyclist are unknown, raising concerns about potential criminal activity targeting travelers in the area.

In light of this incident, there may be calls for increased security measures along the Belize-Mexico border, particularly in the areas surrounding Chetumal. Authorities on both sides of the border may need to collaborate to ensure the safety of travelers
