By Zoila Palma: Students from Walter Johnson Middle School participated in an international-style diplomacy simulation on March 5, joining peers from across North Carolina for Conexiones para la Acción Diplomática (CAD), a Spanish-language event hosted by Participate Learning at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
During the simulation, students assumed the roles of global ambassadors, representing different countries and engaging in structured debates conducted entirely in Spanish. The exercise required participants to analyze global issues while applying their language skills in a real-world context.
This year’s discussions focused on animal well-being and biodiversity protection, with students examining topics such as wildlife trafficking, habitat conservation, and species preservation. Participants were tasked with developing collaborative solutions based on their assigned country’s perspective, following weeks of preparation that included research, drafting opening statements, and forming policy proposals.
The event also featured interactive activities designed to strengthen both language proficiency and global awareness.
Students rotated through stations where they practiced conversational Spanish, matched countries with their national flags, and produced mock news segments highlighting their participation. Additional activities encouraged reflection on conservation efforts and the importance of protecting wildlife.
Participation in CAD forms part of Participate Learning’s Conexiones programme, which aims to advance bilingualism while building critical skills such as communication and problem-solving.
Belizean educator Joel Flores, who is a global ambassador engaged with the Participate Learning Program expressed pride in working with students on advancing bilingual education.
“I’m proud to have worked with students on the Conexiones para la Acción Diplomática debate, helping them develop language skills, cultural understanding, and critical thinking. It’s been an exciting year, with our school even featuring in the news! “Participating in CAD showed our students the power of bilingualism and global thinking—I’m proud to stand beside them as they use language to lead, connect, and create positive change.” Flores said.
