Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarria wins U23 category in 2nd stage of Tour of Chiriquí in Panama; finishes 5th in general classification

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarria won the U23 category in 2nd stage of the XLIII International Cycling Tour of Chiriquí (Vuelta Ciclista Internacional a Chiriquí) in Panama riding for US Team Rio Grande. Chavarria placed fifth in the general classification.

Twenty-year-old Chavarria clocked two hours, 27 minutes, and 38 seconds (16:29) ahead of 14 other U23 riders including his teammate Shay Wright who finished tenth.

Stage 2 was a 96.6-km (60.375 mile) closed criterium at the Kenny Serracin Stadium. The race which started at 10:00 am (9:00 am Belize Time) covered 20 laps on a 4.83 kilometre course.

Chavarria clocked the same time as the overall stage winner and Elite rider Bredio Ruiz of team Rali Yajois-Herrera. His teammates Conor Schunk (15th), Wright(32nd), and Isaac Kovack (44th) finished in the 44-man strong peloton clocking the same time.

On Monday, Chavarria finished in fifth place in the U23 category and 23rd in the general classification.

After Stage 2, he is still fifth in the U23 with a total time of 2:44:07, 1:01 behind leader Fabio Gámez of 7C Economy Lacoinex who has a time of 2:43:06.

He is also still 23rd in the general classification, 1:02 behind overall leader Gabriel Rojas of 7C Economy Lacoinex who has a time of 2:43:05. Gámez is second overall.

Chavarria’s teammates Conor and Wright are 24th and 25th respectively.

80 riders are competing in the Tiru of Chiriquí, with 26 of them in the U23 category.

In the points classification, Chavarria is sixth with six points. Ruiz is the leader with 15 points.

Rio Grande is still overall in the 12-team competition with the same time as leading team  Panama es Cultura y Valores. The first eight teams have the same time: 7:22:54.

Stage 3 on Wednesday will be a 146.1-km (60.375 mile) race from the Chiriquí all in the City of David to Progresso, Circunvalación San Pablo, Los Anastacios, and back to David finishing at the Parque de las Madres. The race starts at 10:00 am (9:00 am Belize Time). Riding on a 4.83 kilometre course the cyclists will ride 20 laps.

The Tour of Chiriquí is an international seven-stage race which runs from Tuesday, January 8 to Sunday, January 14, 2024. The cyclists will cover 729.8 kilometres (456.1 miles), with a variety of challenges, such as a Team Time Trial, a flat terrain, three mountain days, and two closed circuits.
