By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean cyclist Derrick Chavarria competing on Wednesday in the third stage of the 46th Vuelta Ciclística Independencia in the Dominican Republic. Representing Cayman’s Phoenix International team, Chavarria went into this stage riding high on the heels of an exceptional performance in Stage 2.
In the second stage, Chavarria excelled as the top Under-23 cyclist, finishing 7th out of 120 riders in the general classification. This achievement marked a significant improvement from his 45th place ranking in Stage 1. Despite the challenging 117 km route between Santo Domingo and La Romana, Chavarria delivered a remarkable performance, clocking in at 2:27:31—the same time as stage winner Dominican Deivy Capellán from El Boro Cycling Team.
Phoenix International placed 3rd out of 21 teams with a combined time of 7:22:33, matching El Boro’s.
The seven-day tour commenced on Monday, February 24, and will continue until Sunday, March 2.
In the general classification, Robigzon Oyola of the Colombian team Medellín remains in the lead with a combined time of 4:52:05. An impressive 103 riders finished Stage 2 together with the same time, allowing Chavarria to move up from 45th to 44th place with a time of 4:56:59, 4:54 behind the leader.
Stage 3 promises to be one of the toughest of the competition, with 118 km of pure challenge from Santo Domingo to Rancho Arriba. The route features three mountain prizes, including a tough category 1 climb to 966 meters altitude, and sprint points in strategic locations. The final goal is Rancho Arriba, after a challenging climb to 681 meters altitude. The official start was set for 9:30 am (7:30 am Belize time) on Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
Chavarria’s exceptional performance in Stage 2 has set high expectations for his performance in the upcoming stage. With the battle in the mountains already underway, all eyes are on Chavarria and his potential to continue climbing the ranks.
