By Breaking Belize News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has sounded the alarm on an escalating sugar smuggling crisis and issued an official statement on the matter. In the statement, the UDP is accusing the ruling People’s United Party (PUP) of turning a blind eye to the illicit cross-border trade. The situation has led to domestic sugar shortages and unauthorized hike in the price of local sugar.
Citing a recent incident in Patchakan village, the UDP says “a recent patrol of the Belize Defense Force along the Rio Hondo River resulted in the seizure of many sacks of Belizean sugar from individuals crossing an unsanctioned border point. Shortly after the seizure, the owner of the sugar made a phone call. The BDF platoon then received a call with Cabinet level orders for them to return the sugar and let the individuals go free.” This the UDP claims follows a similar incident in January where a Guatemalan truck loaded with Belizean sugar was allegedly released without charge after intervention by Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai.
These incidents, the UDP argues, point to a pattern of government complicity in sugar smuggling, exacerbating a crisis that has seen Belize, a sugar-producing nation, forced to import sugar for local consumption. The scarcity has driven up prices, and the UDP says “residents are raising alarm because in Patchakan and surrounding villages, despite sugar being a controlled good, it is difficult to find sugar for less than $1.25 per pound – and in recent the shopkeepers have a quota system in place per family”.
“The Briceno/Mai government has sanctioned illegal cross-border trade,” the UDP said in the statement. “The imminent sugar crisis is a direct result, and consumers should not be forced to pay for it.”
The party has called on law enforcement agencies to defy political pressure and crack down on sugar smuggling, rejecting any suggestion of raising local sugar prices as a solution. They argue that consumers should not bear the burden of the government’s alleged inaction and incompetence.
The UDP statement ends by saying the party “rejects the very contemplation of raising the prices on local sugar as a way to disincentivize illegal smuggling. Consumers should not be forced to pay for government’s inability and unwillingness to crack down on illegal cross border trade. It has long been time to admit that the Abelardo Mai experiment has failed for everyone except rich mega farmers and cross border smugglers.”
The UDP’s accusations have reignited a long-standing debate over the cross-border trade of sugar and the government’s role in regulating it. While some argue that stricter enforcement is necessary to protect the local control price, local industries and consumers, others contend that the control price should be increased to narrow the price difference between Belize and neighbouring Mexico and Guatemala, and the trade restrictions should be removed to facilitate greater trade, both formal and informal, between Belize and our neighbours.
