By Zoila Palma: Belize participated in the 12th Ibero-American Museum Conference, held under the theme “Shared Heritage, Common Futures” from September 14 to 16 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The conference brought together museum and heritage professionals from across the Ibero-American region to exchange knowledge and explore new approaches to museum development.
Representing the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) was Zeidi Vellos of the Corozal House of Culture, Museum of Belize and Houses of Culture. Vellos joined regional professionals in discussions focused on strengthening connections and advancing museum practices across participating countries.
Reflecting on the conference, Vellos said, “I return home with new ideas, a renewed passion for our heritage, and an even stronger desire to contribute to the growth and development of museums in Belize.”
Belize’s participation also highlighted the role of museums as spaces where communities can connect with, learn from and celebrate their shared heritage.
The participation took place during Belize’s Pro Tempore Presidency of the Coordination of Education and Culture of the Central American Integration System (CECC/SICA), reinforcing the country’s focus on regional cooperation in culture, heritage and museums.
The conference was supported by the Ministry of Culture, NICH, the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, the Ibero-American Cultural Space and CECC/SICA.
