Belize Reparations Committee urges Britain to move beyond apology and deliver justice for Slavery

By Zoila Palma:  The Belize National Reparations Committee is calling on Britain to move beyond acknowledging its role in the transatlantic slave trade and pursue meaningful reparatory justice.

In a press release responding to an October 30, 2026, article by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham published in “The Guardian”, the Committee welcomed his openness to a formal apology and structured dialogue but challenged his rejection of financial reparations.

The Committee argued that present-day British citizens should not be expected to bear personal guilt for the actions of previous generations, but maintained that governments inherit obligations from earlier administrations. “Historical responsibility cannot simply disappear with the passing of generations,” the Committee stated.

Highlighting Belize’s colonial history as British Honduras, the Committee noted that enslaved Africans were forced to work in the forests extracting logwood and mahogany, generating wealth for British merchants and the colonial economy.

It also pointed to the unequal treatment following abolition, when British slave owners received compensation while formerly enslaved people received nothing for generations of forced labour and suffering. The Committee said these historical injustices warrant acknowledgment and appropriate redress.

While recognizing that a sincere apology would represent meaningful progress, the Committee stressed that reparatory justice must extend beyond words.

It pointed to CARICOM’s Ten-Point Plan for Reparatory Justice, which includes measures addressing education, health, cultural restoration and economic development, among other areas intended to confront the lasting effects of slavery and colonialism. “However, meaningful negotiations cannot begin with one party unilaterally deciding which forms of reparations are off the table,” the Committee declared.

The Belize National Reparations Committee reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside CARICOM partners in constructive engagement with the British government.
