By Horace Palacio: Belize has once again demonstrated its steadfast support for Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties with the island nation. During the recent 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Belize joined a host of Taiwan’s allies in voicing their backing for Taiwan’s meaningful inclusion in the global body.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) in Taiwan expressed its gratitude to its diplomatic allies, including Belize, for advocating Taiwan’s cause during the General Debate, which ran from September 24 to October 2. Belize, alongside other nations such as Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Eswatini, and Palau, used the international platform to highlight Taiwan’s contributions to the global community and to contest China’s misrepresentation of UN Resolution 2758.
Belizean officials emphasized that Resolution 2758, which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole representative of China in the UN, does not address the issue of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. They underscored Taiwan’s right to be meaningfully included in UN agencies and its capacity to contribute to international peace, security, and sustainable development.
Belize’s advocacy in support of Taiwan at the UN is rooted in a shared commitment to democratic values and international cooperation. The Belize government’s stance reflects the strong ties between the two nations, which have been built on mutual respect and collaboration over the years.
MOFA expressed its deep appreciation for Belize’s unwavering support, acknowledging that the nation’s voice in the international arena plays a crucial role in amplifying Taiwan’s calls for inclusion. Taiwan’s participation in the UN is seen as vital not only for its 23 million citizens but for the global community as well, particularly in areas such as public health, technology, and sustainable development.
Belize continues to be a key ally in Taiwan’s efforts to gain recognition on the global stage, standing firm against diplomatic pressure from China. The Belize government remains committed to supporting Taiwan’s inclusion in the UN system, emphasizing that the exclusion of Taiwan is a loss to the international community.
As the UN seeks to promote its core principle of “leave no one behind” in achieving sustainable development goals, Belize calls on the global community to ensure Taiwan is included in these efforts for the benefit of all humanity.
