By Zoila Palma: The Belize Policy Research Institute at the University of Belize (BELPRI-UB) and the Institute of Social and Cultural Research – National Institute of Culture and History (ISCR-NICH) today opened the “Keeping Independence Alive: Belize @45” Research Conference at the University of Belize Conference Centre in Belmopan.
The two-day conference, being held from September 30 to October 1, is the final event on the 2026 September Celebrations calendar.
It brings together scholars, policymakers and community leaders to examine Belize’s 45-year journey since independence, including the country’s achievements, challenges and possible policy approaches for the future.
The conference opened with a keynote address by Assad Shoman, who reflected on Belize’s independence journey and highlighted the importance of national dialogue, historical research and policy action.
Over the two days, participants will hear 22 research presentations across eight thematic panels, examining Belize’s efforts to build a more independent and decolonized nation, as well as political, economic, social and cultural developments since 1981.
The second day will also feature the launch of “Enduring Diplomacy: Belize 1971 to 2026,” authored by Assad Shoman and Alexis Rosado.
