By Zoila Palma:  Today marks the official launch of the Belize Policy Research Institute (BELPRI) at the University of Belize (UB), a significant step in the country’s efforts to enhance its public policy research capabilities.

BELPRI aims to become a highly respected and influential policy institution, with its evidence-based research driving public policies and fostering a more prosperous, equitable, just, and peaceful Belizean society.

The establishment of BELPRI-UB is closely aligned with the University of Belize’s mission to advance excellence in research and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development. UB’s commitment to this initiative underscores its dedication to becoming a center of excellence in fostering impactful research that supports national growth.

In his remarks, UB President Dr. Vincent Palacio extended his congratulations to the Prime Minister and his government on securing another term in office.

Dr. Palacio highlighted the timely launch of BELPRI as an essential development for Belize, acknowledging the University’s role in welcoming and supporting the creation of this new institute.

Dr. Dylan Vernon, BELPRI’s Executive Director, outlined the institute’s vision for success. He emphasized BELPRI’s commitment to providing essential services such as budget analysis, policy development, and strategic guidance on public issues.

Dr. Vernon discussed the importance of rigorous research in shaping policies that effectively address the country’s most pressing challenges.

Historian and writer Dr. Assad Shoman, renowned for his work on Belize’s history and its colonial ties, shared insights into the nation’s past and the ongoing struggle for true independence.

Dr. Shoman praised both the University of Belize and BELPRI for their initiative, calling for a deeper exploration and inclusion of Belize’s real history in the national education system.

While Belize has made significant strides in policymaking since its independence, the country still faces substantial policy challenges that impact sustainable human development. These challenges have only grown more complex in recent years, highlighting the need for public policies that are informed by robust research, sound analysis, and broad-based consultations.

These policies must be grounded in long-term development planning and be effectively implemented with a focus on multi-party consensus and collective action.

BELPRI-UB, established in September 2024, will roll out its operations in three key phases: Launch (2024), Acceleration (2025), and Full Throttle (2026 to 2027). The full implementation of BELPRI-UB will culminate in its official launch by the end of 2024.

The institute will be governed by an 8-member Advisory Board and managed by an Executive Director, supported by a team of experts. Dr. Dylan Vernon is the inaugural Executive Director of BELPRI-UB, and his leadership will be instrumental in driving the institute’s mission forward.
