By Zoila Palma: Twenty-five Belizean officers are receiving specialized training in travel document examination and identity fraud detection during a three-day workshop being held in Belmopan from October 6 to 8.
The training is aimed at strengthening the ability of frontline officers to identify fraudulent documents and impostors at border control points.
Participants include officers from the Department of Border Management and Immigration Services (DBMIS) and the Department of Nationality and Passport (NPD), both under the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labour.
Customs and Police officers whose duties involve examining travel and identity documents are also taking part in the workshop.
The training is being delivered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the U.S. Embassy Belmopan, with funding from the European Union through the Regional Integration and Border Management Project, which is implemented by IOM. A special agent and overseas criminal investigator with the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service is facilitating the sessions.
During the workshop, officers are learning how to identify document alterations, counterfeiting and forgery, as well as detect identity fraud and impostors.
They are also receiving practical instruction on the use of examination tools, including ultraviolet lights and magnifiers, with IOM saying the training will strengthen document verification and fraud detection during frontline immigration, law enforcement and border management operations.
