Belize is quietly fighting one of the world’s biggest killers

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP):  Belize is taking steps to improve the way hospitals and health facilities identify and treat sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency that continues to cause preventable deaths across the Americas.

The Pan American Health Organization participated in Belize’s National Workshop on Sepsis Care Pathways Implementation, held from April 15 to 16, 2026, as part of wider regional efforts to strengthen sepsis care and address its close link to antimicrobial resistance.

Sepsis occurs when the body’s response to infection causes widespread damage and can quickly lead to organ failure or death if not recognized and treated early.

During the workshop, health teams focused on improving early detection, timely diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic use and coordinated patient care.

Dr. Pilar Ramón-Pardo, Chief of PAHO/WHO’s AMR Special Program, delivered a keynote technical presentation on antimicrobial stewardship and sepsis. She emphasized that responsible antibiotic use must support lifesaving sepsis treatment, not delay it.

Her message was clear: patients must receive rapid and appropriate initial therapy, but health workers must also know when to adjust or reduce treatment to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

The workshop brought together multidisciplinary teams to examine Belize’s existing sepsis care pathways, identify gaps and prioritize practical improvements.

Health officials say the initiative supports regional efforts to reduce sepsis deaths and strengthen hospital readiness across Belize.
